CradlesLattice cradles were popular in the Southern Plains from about 1870 to 1920. They were also used with other styles of cradles, by the Arapaho, Cheyenne and Lakota people, though with variations in construction, bead designs and lacings. The Kiowa Cradle (left) has a green background and is 25" long with fringe. It is comprised of smoke tanned deer hide, glass seed beads on wool with a cotton liner, mounted on latigo leather. Brass tacks and paint decorate the walnut lattice board. The Lakota Cradle (right) has a white background and is 21" long with fringe. It is comprised of smoke tanned deer hide, glass seed beads on wool with back velvet inner lining, glass chevrons, brass beads, brass tacks, mounted on latigo leather and pine lattice board. |
